Biographical or Historical Data
The Newton Times was a prize-winning, liberal weekly newspaper which published in Newton, Massachusetts from 1971 to 1980. It was an alternative voice created by anti-war activists who weren't content with coverage of the issues by local newspapers. It served as a force in the community as it reported on social issues, analyzed city and public school budgets, assessed and endorsed political candidates and published a voters' guide before each election. It pushed for removal of asbestos in Newton North High School and raised awareness of Newton's distinctive neighborhoods. It was forced to close because of reduced advertising revenue taken by competing weeklies. The Newton Free Library has the Newton Times on microfilm (v. 1, #1, Sept. 8, 1971-v. 9, #22, Jan. 23, 1980), as well as 51 boxes of photographs from the newspaper's archive and a collection of mock-up maps used with articles. Collection includes largely Arts in the Parks and New Art Center programs and classes for adults and children in handicrafts, mural painting, theatre production, mime, circus, puppets and marionettes, folk dancing, modern dance, mask and textile making, sculpture. Programs include auctions, art shows, fund raisers, dedication of the Mabel Riley stained glass window with interior and exterior views of the building at 61 Washington Park in Newtonville. The rest of the collection includes diverse photographs of Allen House footbath, carved toilet, rocks and shells collection and gowns, Newton aldermen of the 1970s, aldermanic chambers, Land Use Committee hearings concerning Newton Towers, abortion rights rally of January, 1974, community gardens, roof thatcher at Plimoth Plantation, Newton North High School magazine room in library, view from St. Xavier Novitiate roof, athletic activities including canoeing on the Charles River, road races and Boston Marathon runners, Newton city officials' baseball game, team of horses viewed drinking at fountain for horses in Hancock Square, Charlestown in 1903, built by Animal Rescue League, J. T. Reed & Co. Kid Gloves is in background on cobblestone street.
